Vega Energy Spring Breakfast

28 March 2019

Vega Energy is proud to to host Dr. Vaclav Smil as our speaker for 2019's Spring Breakfast.

Dr. Smil is considered to be one of the most informed thinkers on energy and climate science. David Keith, Professor of Climatology at Harvard, refers to him as ". . . a slayer of bulls***." Bill Gates has read all of his 40 books and declared on his blog: "I wait for Smil books the way some people wait for the next Star Wars movie." Dr. Smil is honest, practical, and no nonsense. Dr. Smil has published more than 40 books and was honored by the American Energy Society as 2019's Energy Writer of the Year for his most recent book Growth: From Microorganisms to Megacities (The MIT Press, 2019).

Vega Energy Spring Breakfast

8 March 2018

Vega Energy is proud to announce Mark Mills as our speaker for 2018's Spring Breakfast.

Mark is the author of the 2005 book "Bottomless Well," recommended by Bill Gates as "the only book I've seen that really explains energy, its history, and what it will be like going forward." As an experimental physicist, development engineer, technology pundit, policy maker and venture capitalist, Mark has a unique and grounded perspective on the science and economics of the energy industry.

During the Reagan years, Mark served in the White House Science Office and has since been an influential voice in energy policy, frequently testifying before Congress as an expert witness. Currently he works as a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a Faculty Fellow at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University, and a partner in a boutique venture fund focused on the digital oil field.

He is the American Energy Society's 2016 Energy Writer of the Year based on a long list of compelling articles including "Shale 2.0," about the cause and context of the shale oil and gas revolution, and his "Energy Intelligence" column for Forbes. He has written for multiple publications, including the Wall Street Journal and New York Times Magazine, and appeared on many news and talk shows, including CNN, Fox News, CNBC, PBS, NBC, ABC, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Richard Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes, calls Mark "the brightest and most compelling speaker I've seen."
